Ella the pig’s one-of-a-kind surgery
A surgical team at OSU’s veterinary hospital performed the first known total ear canal removal on a pig, a special feat achieved through collaboration with doctors who work on human ears, which share some similarities in anatomy. Ella, the 3-year-old Vietnamese potbelly pig, is recovering well.

OSU scientists have taken a key step toward better understanding neurodegenerative diseases, which impact more than 6 million people in the U.S. The findings shed light on the malfunction of a motor protein, which converts chemical energy into vital processes and functions.
Student’s success inspires family to help others
Mike and Barb Schmierer enjoyed their son Paul’s time at Oregon State almost as much as he did. Paul, ’05, landed a real “catch” of a career, designing high-end fishing rods and reels, and his family’s strong connections to OSU inspired them to become loyal annual donors to the College of Engineering and create a student success endowment in their name.
