Before away games, we gather at a convenient and party-friendly location to get revved up before kickoff!

An update on Pac-12 developments

There’s good news – OSU and WSU’s request for a temporary restraining order to prevent the departing institutions from taking control of the Pac-12 conference was granted. Of course, this win follows another big win on Saturday, when the Beavers looked great in their home opener against UC Davis, and the completed Reser Stadium experience was fantastic!

Beavers unite

If there’s one thing we can be sure about, it’s that Beaver athletics is going to be fun to watch. So, show the world that Beavers unite behind their teams and build dams that last generations by showing up in a sea of orange for all fall sports. Travel Talks - Gorilla Trek in Uganda | Sept. 20

What is it like to walk with a chimpanzee? Or observe endangered mountain gorillas in their native habitat? Join us as Director of Alumni Group Travel Kate Sanders shares photos and stories of visiting local communities; seeing chimpanzees, mountain gorillas and lions; and glamping on the East African savanna with Beaver travelers. There are two buses running from Portland to the Homecoming football game: one for all Beaver fans, and one for recent alumni. Register, show up before the bus heads out, then sit back, relax (or celebrate!) while not worrying about driving the 1.5-hour+ commute to Corvallis and back.

» OSU research awards soared to a record-breaking $480 million last year, bolstering OSU’s ability to pursue answers to pressing challenges: climate-smart potato farming, underwater vehicles, new battery chemistries and multidisciplinary polar science programming are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to recent innovations made possible by recent funding. More than $2.3 million in awards went to OSU-Cascades in Bend.

» Julia Rosen, Ph.D. ’14, brings national attention to the effects of climate change, especially in the Pacific Northwest and Oregon, through her award-winning writing as an independent journalist and author.

» Oregon researchers are pursuing innovative methods to lure hatchery-bred salmon home to their breeding grounds using the scent of beer.

» Oregon State researchers, led by Excellence in Microbiology Faculty Scholar Kimberly Halsey, find a creative and cost-effective approach to “sniff out” toxic algae blooms: by picking up on certain gaseous molecules, they may be able to predict a wide range of environmental stressors in bodies of water.

Get smart about smoke safety

This time of year is particularly challenging when it comes to avoiding the harmful effects of wildfire smoke, particularly the smallest particles that can get trapped deep in your lungs, like PM2.5. Although smoke poses different risks to different people depending on life circumstances, OSU Extension is full of simple advice everyone can use to keep themselves and their families safer. It can start with investigating your air conditioning system and cutting down on the use of bathroom and kitchen fans to stop the spread of polluted air. You could also set up a safe space away from the smoke in your home.

The impact of air pollution on kids

Take a deeper dive on harmful environmental exposure in Oregon and how it affects people, particularly children, as well as OSU’s efforts to combat its risks at the College of Health’s new ASP3IRE Center, in a recent Public Health Insider webcast episode.
