» OSU research led by Xiangyou “Sharon” Shen — an assistant professor in the OSU College of Forestry and the director of the Health, Environment and Leisure Research Lab — shows that playful adults navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with creative adaptability, optimism and a knack for turning everyday challenges into moments of joy.

» Eric Cerino, Ph.D. ’19, honed his passion for healthy aging at Oregon State, where mentorship and interdisciplinary training set him on the path to leading innovative aging research and mentoring future scholars at Northern Arizona University.

» Marine biology student Natalie Donato designed Oregon’s new “Vibrant Ocean” license plate, which supports shark research at OSU’s Big Fish Lab, where she conducts undergraduate research on these vital ocean predators.

» Patricia Vega, managing director of the Wood-Based Composites Center at Oregon State, is empowering the next generation of wood science professionals, particularly women and Latinx students, while advancing innovative research in sustainable materials.

» Oregon State faculty have saved students over $20 million since 2019 by replacing costly textbooks with free and low-cost course materials, increasing students’ access to course content, reducing their time to degree completion and promoting overall academic success.

Beaver gymnast Jade Carey and her 2024 Summer Olympics teammate Jordan Chiles are being honored with Barbie figurines for International Women’s Day, spotlighting the power of friendship and their status as role models for young girls. On championing women in sports, Carey said, “It’s something that we work on even on our team here at Oregon State... Celebrating every little thing and each other.”
