BEAVERS DOING THE UNBELIEVABLE

» OSU-led innovation got a nod from the White House recently, receiving two $500,000 awards to advance microfluidic technology for semiconductors and mass timber design and manufacturing. The goal is to establish the Pacific Northwest as a national leader in these areas within 10 years. Oregon State is leading two of 31 Tech Hubs designated across the nation in an economic development initiative designed to advance American competitiveness.

» OSU engineers are developing spacecraft technology for interplanetary missions. Richard Wirz, OSU’s Boeing Professor in Mechanical Engineering Design, is the university’s lead principal investigator in a NASA-funded program to develop new electric propulsion technology for large spacecraft going boldly to the moon, Mars and beyond. These designs must withstand threats of speed, wild temperature swings, microgravity, launch vibrations and radiation.

» In August, Thomas Dietterich received the highest honor for a career in artificial intelligence. Only 23 others have received the Award for Research Excellence from the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence since its inception in 1985. A Distinguished Professor Emeritus in OSU’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Dietterich is one of the founders of machine learning, a subarea of AI. The real-world applications of his research include drug design, intelligent user interfaces for smart desktops, computer security, management of wildfires and understanding the migration of birds.

» Philip Williams has been named the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts, effective Sept. 16. Currently dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he is a distinguished scholar of political science and Latin American studies. He succeeds Larry Rodgers, whose 17-year tenure made him OSU’s longest-serving dean.

» An OSU graduate is advancing development of photonic chips for rapid data transmission within computer systems. The ultra-energy-efficient chips use photons – particles of light – instead of electrons, and hold promise to help meet the soaring demand for data that is driven by internet services, streaming platforms, cloud computing and artificial intelligence applications. Wei-Che Hsu, M.S. ’20, Ph.D. ’24, won first place for his research in an international laser science competition. His research was also part of the National Science Foundation’s Top 5 Research Stories of 2023.

Stay in the know with Oregon’s research powerhouse

Oregon State is a leader in discovery and innovation, receiving more research funding than all of the state’s comprehensive public universities combined. Alumni and friends can keep in touch with breaking research news by reading the Oregon Stater magazine, subscribing to OSU Today or by following Oregon State News on X and Oregon State University on LinkedIn.

Or how about contributing to OSU research as a volunteer? Housed in the College of Health, the Center for Healthy Aging Research is an interdisciplinary community of scholars who work to optimize the health and well-being of aging individuals and their families. Any adult age 50 or older who lives in Oregon is welcome to volunteer for the LIFE Registry as the first step in possible participation in scientific studies.
