Across the airwaves
Meghna Chakrabarti, ’98, hosts NPR's On Point, interviewing experts on critical issues for over two million listeners. She got her start in civil engineering at OSU, and a pivotal mentorship and passion for public radio led her to journalism. Chakrabarti credits her STEM education at Oregon State in part for shaping her investigative approach — “the method of thinking, in my mind, isn’t all that different,” she says. » OSU President Jayathi Y. Murthy is proudly representing Oregon State University on the state’s new Clean Tech Manufacturing Task Force, created to advance Oregon’s transition toward cleaner and more efficient energy systems.
» Congratulations to Lisa T. Ballance, director of the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University and Endowed Chair of Marine Mammal Research, who has been nominated by President Joe Biden to be chair and member of the Marine Mammal Commission.
» OSU doctoral student Eric Slyman worked with Stefan Lee in the College of Engineering and Adobe researchers to create a new, cost-effective training technique for artificial intelligence systems that aims to reduce social biases in AI.
» In June, a multi-institutional team led by OSU’s Bill Chadwick, research professor at Hatfield Marine Science Center, visited Axial Seamount to examine one of the most active and highly studied submarine volcanoes on Earth. Watch the video.

» Congrats to Jade Carey, who brought her Olympic medal count to three at the Paris Olympics! Having won a gold on floor exercise in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she captured the second gold medal of her career with Team USA scoring comfortably ahead of their competitors in the team final, then took the podium once more, winning bronze in the vault final.
