John Byrne

Remembering President Emeritus John V. Byrne

Oregon State University President Emeritus John V. Byrne will be remembered for his commitment to excellence and advancing the university’s global reputation. In addition to his far-reaching impact as a scientist, educator and administrator, his leadership as a philanthropist and volunteer made a lasting impact on the university and the Corvallis community. Byrne died on Jan. 11 at age 95.

» Fifty-five years ago, Douglas Engelbart, ’48, ’94 (Hon. Ph.D.), who designed the first computer mouse, unveiled the future of computers in a demonstration known today as the “Mother of All Demos.” He received a standing ovation from the crowd of over 1,000 computer and engineering scientists.

» Computer science instructor Kari Wagstaff is working in Washington, D.C, this academic year, serving as an artificial intelligence expert and advisor in an Arizona senator’s office.

» Lauren Gwin, who helped found the Oregon State University Center for Small Farms and Community Food Systems in 2013, has been named the organization’s director.

» A new, interactive plant hardiness map co-developed by Oregon State’s PRISM Climate Group and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is helping gardeners nationwide determine which plants are most likely to survive the coldest winter temperatures. The USDA calls it ‘the most accurate and detailed it has ever released.’

» In this podcast, hear OSU's Lisa Ballance, director of the Marine Mammal Institute and Endowed Chair of Marine Mammal Research, talk about the blue whale that washed up near Oregon’s Gold Beach in 2015 and how the MMI is turning its skeleton into an important education tool.
