U.S. Navy veteran becomes OSU’s first online honors graduate    

In winter 2023, Jose Torres became the first OSU student to complete an honors degree online. A veteran who joined the service straight out of high school, Torres studied fisheries, wildlife and conservation sciences online through OSU Ecampus and gained life-changing research experiences while completing his honors thesis.

» The OSU Board of Trustees approved a bold, achievable university strategic plan that will guide Oregon State through 2030. Prosperity Widely Shared: The Oregon State Plan seeks to increase research activity, improve graduation rates and increase enrollment online and at OSU-Cascades in Bend.

» Oregon State will receive a $500,000 federal grant to assess the impact of sea level rise. This vital research will help Oregon’s coastal communities improve protections to overcome climate challenges.

» OSU students and College of Engineering Executive Director Alan Fern recently returned from providing a robot demonstration at the Pentagon. The team shared how the humanoid robot Digit, created by OSU students with the help of Agility Robotics, could help accelerate tasks such as loading and unloading military trucks and delivery trucks.

» An OSU student team won the 2023 ‘Big Beam Competition’ in Chicago, a competition that teaches structural engineering skills in an applied learning environment. Students performed design calculations, built the beam and observed actual behavior of the beam through the test.

» Oregon State researchers uncovered a new avenue of drug research for a liver disease that currently has no FDA-approved medications; omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids play an important role.

Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is one of 35 on the Davey O’Brien Quarterback Class of 2023, making him a candidate for the 2023 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, presented to the most outstanding college quarterbacks annually since 1977. Go Beavs!
