Dear OSU parents and family members,

I hope this edition of the Beaver Family Newsletter finds each of you enjoying the last stretch of a wonderful summer and that you’ve enjoyed precious moments with friends and family to recharge for the coming fall.

If you are a first-year Oregon State University parent or family member, I may have had the pleasure of meeting you during one of the many START orientation sessions hosted by the Office of Student Orientation. It’s been energizing and inspiring to interact with so many families getting ready to send their student(s) to OSU this fall. The community that works with students here at OSU truly understands that sending your child off to college is exciting, but also emotional and stressful. We are here to provide needed support and guidance throughout their academic journey — and yours.

If your student is transferring to OSU, or coming in as a sophomore or above, there are different needs and questions that may be on your mind. Exploring careers, networking with alumni and honing job skills can’t begin too early. Students should take the time to get acquainted with all that the OSU Career Development Center offers. Know also that the OSU Alumni Association offers career services for life. Within this newsletter is an excellent step-by-step guide to help your student navigate career planning while they’re still in school.

We have exciting new resources and services to tell you about. But first, mark your calendar for Fall Family Weekend, Oct. 13 to 15. This year, Fall Family Weekend will be combined with OSU’s Homecoming celebration, which means there will be even more to see and do!

I hope to see you on campus for all the autumn fun — or whenever you come to visit your student(s). Until then, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, ideas or suggestions on how OSUAA can help YOU support your student throughout their OSU journey.

Warm regards and GO BEAVS!

Parents helping parents

An especially poignant moment of the summer orientation happens when families who have experienced sending a child to college share their hard-won knowledge with parents going through it for the first time. Universal themes come up frequently, such as “Don’t expect your kid to answer your calls and text as often as they used to,” and “Listen but let them find their own solutions to the challenges they’ll experience,” providing both comfort and insight.

HELPING BEAVERS BE WELL

Connection builds resilience

The last few years have been difficult. But the good news is that students have learned skills through the challenges of the pandemic that are transferable, such as the ability to be self-motivated, resourceful and resilient. These skills will serve them well on campus and help them to be flexible in the face of obstacles or unpredictable events.

One of the most important keys to overcoming challenges is having strong social connections. Students thrive when they find their people. Connecting with other students outside of the classroom is a big part of the college experience, and OSU offers countless ways for students to get involved. At OSU, students engage with cultural resource centers that celebrate and embrace the richness of our community, better the world through civic engagement, develop connections in student clubs and organizations and compete in recreational sports. Encourage your student to explore our vast array of co-curricular opportunities. Getting involved will help them pursue their interests, develop leadership skills and forge lasting friendships. When Beavers find their community, it contributes to their holistic development and success at OSU.

VIEW ADVICE FOR PARENTS

Prioritizing student mental health takes all of us

The Oregon State University community is demonstrating a powerful commitment to supporting our students’ well-being by joining together to support the Student Mental Health Fund. Across the nation, strong mental health has been critical to students’ ability to succeed in college — yet in 2022, 81% of OSU students reported moderate or serious psychological distress. Whether students need support managing depression, anxiety or other concerns, the OSU community must work together to ensure students have the support they need.

SUPPORT OSU STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH

Inside OSU’s new Health Center

OSU’s Student Health Services in June began providing clinical services in the newly constructed Health Center near Reser Stadium, one of three new locations. With the new Health Center, the university builds upon its partnership with Samaritan Health Services and expands health care for students and other community members. The Health Center location includes a SamCare Express for same-day care of non-life-threatening health concerns. Students will be able to visit SamCare Express in the evenings and on the weekends when OSU Student Health facilities are closed. OSU students may access other services, such as X-rays and a pharmacy, at the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center on campus.

CAREER CORNER

Helping your student prepare for their career journey
Karla Rockhold, Director of Alumni Career Engagement

Using university career resources early and often is vital. Studies show that students who access the services provided are more likely to receive paid internships, graduate with more job offers and earn higher starting salaries than those who do not. That’s why OSU’s Career Development Center has designed a roadmap to help your student identify valuable resources and activities for each stage of their career preparation while in college.

As a former career advisor for the College of Liberal Arts at OSU, one of the top reasons students made appointments with me is because a family member encouraged them to do so! It is a great idea to remind your student that they have easy access to career advising and resources at OSU. Also, your student will have access to these services for up to a year after graduation. If you have any questions about the OSU Career Development Center, don’t hesitate to reach out to them.

Save the date: Ask Alumni Career Panels

The OSUAA, in partnership with the CDC, regularly host Ask Alumni panels, which feature dynamic alumni and industry partners who provide career guidance designed to lay the groundwork for student success in the classroom and beyond. These interactive panels are offered both virtually and in-person to provide students with an opportunity to also grow their professional network. Have your student save the date for these upcoming panels (registration coming soon!):

Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams
Matthew Walker

The director of UC Berkeley’s sleep and neuroimaging lab reveals a groundbreaking exploration of sleep and how we can all harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better. A recent study found that every hour of lost total average nightly sleep was associated with a 0.07 reduction in end-of-term GPA for college students. Students have “competing pressures” to stay up late in college, especially in their freshman year. Share this book with your student to learn how to create healthy sleeping habits that will benefit them for life.
