Ryan Brown, Mikey Kane and DJ Uiagalelei Picked In Day 3 of MLB Draft

Garret Forrester was the only Oregon State baseball player who had his name called in the first two days of the 2023 MLB Draft, but in the final day a few more Beavers earned their chance to play in the pros. That list includes pitcher Ryan Brown, infielder Mikey Kane and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

Ryan Brown was picked by the Oakland Athletics with the 46th overall pick in the 16th round. Brown has been a key part of the Beaver bullpen for the past two seasons. After a 2023 campaign where he notched 11 saves with a 3.23 ERA, Brown was named an All Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

Mikey Kane was picked by the Chicago White Sox with the 509th overall pick in the 16th round. Kane, who plays 2nd, 3rd and shortstop, was one of the breakout players for Oregon State’s offense this past season. In 2023 he finished with a .281 BA, a .396 OBP, and a .871 OPS.

Uiagalelei was perhaps the strangest name to see called in the draft. While he has yet to take a snap for the Beavers, Uiagalelei is projected to Oregon State Football’s starting quarterback this fall. Uiagalelei did play baseball in high school, but after joining Clemson as a top prospect has entirely focused on football. Still, the Los Angeles Dodgers decided to take a flyer on him in the 20th round. If UIagalelei is unable to convince an NFL squad to take a shot on him after this coming season, the Dodgers might be a fall back option.

The best news for Oregon State is that their team should be mostly intact heading into the next season, with no major departures in the transfer portal and only a handful of losses in the draft. They have a promising young team, and should be able to take a step forward next season.
