Beavs Break Program Score Record with 198.075 in Victory at Stanford

February 24, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 11 Oregon State gymnastics broke the school beam record, tied the second-highest floor score in program history and posted season-bests on all four en route to a program record 198.075 in a magical night at Maples Pavilion, defeating No. 24 Stanford's 197.575.

"I challenged our team earlier in the day to really lock in and focus on the things that we needed to do," Tanya Chaplin said. "They responded to that in a big way. It was great to see all four events clicking on all cylinders and achieve something this program has never done before by going over the 198-mark. I couldn't be prouder of each one of our girls tonight and the work that put in to achieve this as a team."

For the third time this season, and second-straight week, Jade Carey posted perfect 10.000s on two different events. Carey picked up her first perfect score of the year on bars, while earning her third 10 of the year on floor.

Breaking the program record in the all-around last week, Carey matched that score with a 39.875 for the highest all-around score in the country this year. She picked up her 80th career event title with victories on bars, beam, floor and the all-around, while teammate Madi Dagen picked up her first event title of the season with a 9.925 on vault.

Starting the evening on bars, the Beavs bested their previous season best of 49.350 with a 49.375 to open the competition. Having competed on exhibition on numerous occasions, freshman Savannah Miller entered the lineup for the first time with a 9.850 and fellow first-year Jennifer McMillan matched a career high with a 9.850, while Carey capped a big first rotation with her second-career 10.000 on bars.

Briones – 9.700 (exh.)

The Beavs rotated to vault, and again, posted a season high, matching the 49.375 of the bars group. Kaitlin Garcia started the rotation by matched her season high and sophomore Natalie Briones matched her career high in the third spot, with both gymnasts scoring 9.825s. Fifth-year senior Madi Dagen pulled off her best vault of the season with a stunning Yurchenko 1 ½ for a season-high 9.925.

Four different Beavs matched or set career highs on floor, starting with Ari Young in the second spot going over 9.900 on floor for the first time in her career with a 9.925, while Sydney Gonzales matched Young for a new career high in the four spot of the lineup. For the second-straight week Dagen posted a 9.950 and the 49.675 was capped by Carey's second-straight 10.000 on the event, as the Beavs came within .025 of breaking the 2004 school record of 49.700.

Needing a 49.425 to match the previous school record of 197.850, the beam team for OSU got all that and more, breaking the school record the group set not even a week ago with a 49.650 to put the exclamation mark on a night to remember for the program.
