FURst Aid: Preventing and Treating Colic in Horses
Presented Feb. 22, 2024
In this FURst Aid event, Dr. Kelsey Jurek will teach you what to expect when dealing with the common emergency of colic. You'll learn what it is, how to respond, when to call your veterinarian and what to expect if you're referred to a veterinary hospital. You'll also learn how veterinarians differentiate surgical versus medical colics and get an overview of current cost of care and prognosis.
Dr. Jurek is an assistant professor of large animal emergency medicine in the Oregon State University Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.

In this FURst Aid, Dr. William “Bill” Whitler and Dr. Olivia Stricklin will teach you preventative care tips to help your dogs and cats through all aspects of reproductive health as well as strategies to deal with common injuries and complications.
Dr. Whitler is a board certified theriogenologist (veterinary reproductive specialist) and an assistant professor at the college. Dr. Stricklin is a theriogenology resident and is also pursuing a graduate degree in comparative health sciences at the college.

With live demonstration (featuring his pet dog Ivy) from the rehabilitation facilities at our Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital, you’ll learn how rehabilitation techniques and equipment can help as well as skills you can put into practice with your pet at home. Dave is a certified veterinary technician and a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner.

FURst Aid: NSAIDs Responsible Use in Large Animals

In this FURst Aid, Dr. Andee Frei overviews how NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) work and includes recommendations for when and when not to give them. The presentation focuses primarily on horses, but also includes some recommendations for usage in ruminants.
Dr. Frei is a large animal internal medicine resident at the Oregon State University Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.

Help! My horse injured itself in a competition. What do I do?
In this FURst Aid, Dr. Stacy Semevolos and Dr. Katja Zellmer will describe how to handle common sports-related injuries in horses, including bowed tendons, fractures, joint injuries and more. They will highlight simple methods that horse owners can do to stabilize their horses before their vet arrives. Choose to attend in person (space is limited) or via Zoom webinar.
