Oregon State Athletics Unveils New Gymnastics Practice Facility

April 26, 2021 | Women's Gymnastics

Project completion continues facility enhancement momentum under Barnes

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes  unveiled the new $7.15-million OSU Gymnastics Practice Facility to the program's student-athletes Monday.
The 20,000-square-foot center, the largest in the Pac-12, is now a part of over $14-million of completed improvements to women's facilities stemming from the Oregon State Athletics Strategic Plan Barnes initiated in 2018.

The completion of this project speaks directly to advancing a significant Facilities Master Plan priority as part of our overarching strategic plan.

"The investment in facilities and infrastructure necessary to compete at the highest level is critical," Barnes said. "For decades, OSU Gymnastics has featured elite student-athletes. Their national standing inspired a gift in the early 1990s to establish the Gladys Valley Gymnastics Center.  Their continuing success has inspired a new training facility that matches contemporary training needs."

The new training home befits a program that reached the NCAA Regionals for the 46th-straight season in 2021 under the leadership of head coach Tanya Chaplin.

"We compete against the best of the best, and this facility allows our current and future student-athletes to prepare their minds and bodies the right way," Chaplin said. "It helps our program continue to move upward."

Watch as Associate Head Coach Michael Chaplin and Assistant Coach Bryan Raschilla tour the facility.

From the outset, the vision for the OSU Gymnastics Facility was to enhance competitiveness, functionality, wellness, community and recruiting. To that end, the space includes a 250 percent increase in studio space, a 2,000-square-foot team area, all new training equipment, and a lobby that includes spectator seating and recognition of the program's history of success. This venue also includes fully integrated video and sound, on-floor instructional screens, plunge pools, team meeting and office space, locker room and an on-site resources for physical therapy.

"I thank Tanya and (associate head coach) Michael Chaplin for their leadership of this program, their vision for this facility, and their partnership in helping to make it a reality," Barnes said. "I'd also like to express my gratitude to every donor who helped make this possible.  This new home would not be possible without the support of the nearly 100 contributors who were inspired by this exciting future for gymnastics."

The project continues the momentum of significant facility enhancement at Oregon State under Barnes' Facilities Master Plan, headlined by the announcement of the Completing Reser Stadium project that begins construction this fall. Major improvements or renovations connected with the plan include: the renovation of the P. Wayne Valley Sports Performance Center; significant upgrades to Gill Coliseum to include a center-hung videoboard and LED lights, renovation of the exterior plaza and renovations to the men's and women's basketball locker rooms; significant upgrades to Kelly Field (softball) to include an indoor hitting facility, new turf and infield surface and stadium lights; the renovation of the Omaha Room and construction of Casey Corner at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field; construction of an 1100 seat grandstand and press box at Paul Lorenz Field; continued investments in football to include an LED ribbon board in Reser Stadium as well as renovations to the Valley Football Center Hall of Fame, Valley Football Center Meeting Rooms and the office area; and the construction of a practice facility and covered driving range area at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

The gymnastics facility was funded with a combination of philanthropy secured through the OSU Foundation and university support.

"I am extremely grateful to the donors, fans and alumni who stepped up in support of this project," Chaplin said. "Thank you, Scott Barnes and our administration, for making this a priority."

The gymnastics program vacates its longtime home at the Gladys Valley Gymnastics Center. An iconic building located in central campus, the GVGC served as the home for the "GymBeavs" for nearly 30 years. A key part of the transition was the relocation of the historic Joy Selig statue to the new facility. The piece, created by James Stephenson and dedicated in 1993, commemorates the achievements of the former Beaver gymnast, an OSU Athletics hall of fame member and three-time national champion.
